A slow computer can be a symptom of many different issues.
Questions to ask are:
is the computer freezing at startup? Is it slow to boot up? Generally slow inside Windows? or is it just a particular application?

Many people experience their computer getting slower over time. It's frustrating because you spend a decent amount of money only for a year later feeling like you need a new one. This is not necessary as a tune-up or refresh of the machine will do the trick.
The fact is that every machine should be refreshed every six months. This is just due to the amount of junk that accumulates on a computer.
Slowness issues can also be a sign of a virus or malware. It is important to have good virus detection software and that your definitions are up-to-date. Since viruses mutate daily the virus package needs to be updated daily.
Some quick ways off speeding up a computer is stripping away the processes or applications that are running in background.
1. Modify the items that start up with Windows:
Windows Vista and 7:
Press the start menu and type msconfig then enter.
Windows XP or earlier:
Press the start menu - run - type msconfig then enter.
Go to the startup tab.
Go through the list and untick anything that you know you do not use. IMPORTANT: do not untick anything that you do not! If you aren't sure search the item online to identify it.
You then push apply and ok then reboot. When the computer gets back into windows after a reboot a box will come up just tick it to tell it not to keep pestering you. Done!
2. This is generally for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Windows Vista and Windows server come with a graphical overlay which basically makes everything look pretty. This is great but it also uses up a lot of resources. To make it so the computer boots up faster and runs faster you might want to disable this.
